The Videos of Björk: Part 1

Published in

As part of Björk week here at Squid Can, here's a quick overview of Björk's music videos. The videos featured here come from songs on Debut, Post, and Homogenic. Part 2 will come round tomorrow and contain videos from Björk's latter three albums. Enjoy!

MP3 after the jump.

Human Behaviour (1993)

Directed by Michael Gondry. A very Norshteynian video in which Björk is chased by a bear, gets eaten by the bear, plants a Soviet flag upon the moon, and waves at a giant moth with spoons. A Goldilocks redux in a frighteningly adorable light.

Venus As A Boy (1993)

Directed by Sophie Muller. To match the "Big Time Sensuality" of this song (little joke there), Björk recruited Sophie Muller to create a visual companion to George Bataille's classic tale of perversions, Story of the Eye. Björk, however, was displeased when Muller insisted on fried egg imagery for the video, saying it was "too hard...rough...and greasy." Muller later read the novella and concurred with Björk: it was the wrong egg.* Regardless of inaccurate imagery, this video features Björk all punked out, including the amazingly ridiculous hairstyle she donned in the early stages of her solo career.

It's Oh So Quiet (1995)

Directed by Spike Jonze. The song that vaulted Björk a bit further into the realm of stardom. In this expertly choreographed video, Björk flaunts all the classic songstress she has in her. This is as mainstream as Björk gets; and let's face it, a Betty Hutton cover is far from typical of an international pop star.

Possibly Maybe (1996)

Directed by Stéphane Sednaoui. Hyper-neon colors flash, appealing trinkets appear in the background, and Björk alternates between attractive hairdos and the aforementioned hideous one. Overall it is unnerving yet cool, frantic yet composed. Certainly a piece of visual candy.

I Miss You (1996)

For the last video from Post, Björk enlisted John Kricfalusi, the creator of Ren and Stimpy, to direct. Jimmy the Idiot Boy, a Kricfalusi trademark, appears as Björk's future lover. Surreal, retro, saucy, and flirtatiously grotesque, the video for "I Miss You" is doubtlessly a winner.

Bachelorette (1997)

Directed by Michael Gondry. Isobel finds a book that writes itself, brings it to the city to be published, and a series of metafictional skits commences. Decked in deliciously vintage hues and mounds of foliage, the dramatic "Bachelorette" finds its graphic companion in this strangely comforting video.

Alarm Call (1997)

The steamy atmospherics of the upbeat "Alarm Call" are perfectly mirrored in this video directed by Alexander McQueen. "Alarm Call" fascinates the viewer with its provocative jungle theme. Lushly produced, a little bit suggestive, and bursting with vibrancy.
